When Ego Masquerades as Astrology

Astrology, once a tool for deep personal insight, is now often reduced to a performance. Many self-proclaimed astrologers parade their interpretations in public forums, analyzing not just celebrities but also their clients, peers, and even strangers—all without consent. They justify it by keeping names anonymous, but does anonymity make it any less of a betrayal?

The Illusion of Public Chart Analysis

Publicly dissecting someone’s birth chart, even without revealing their identity, is an act of exposure. It turns a deeply personal map into a spectacle. Such astrology is not about guidance or wisdom—the astrologer seeks to be seen as insightful, superior, or mystical. Astrologers seek validation, likes, and applause. They crave the illusion of power, mistaking their assumptions for divine messages.

A true astrologer respects the sacredness of their craft. They understand that a birth chart is not a conversation piece; it’s an intimate reflection of someone’s life. To project personal opinions onto it, to spin narratives for an audience, is not just immature—it is a violation. It reduces astrology to entertainment, stripping it of its depth and integrity.

The greatest irony? Those who expose others’ charts often claim to be divine messengers, yet they fail the first test of wisdom: restraint. True wisdom doesn’t seek an audience. It doesn’t need to prove itself. It speaks only when necessary and only to the one who seeks. Anything else is ego-dressed as insight.

Neither is such a practice justified under the name of learning or group study, which often serves more as a means to build one’s practice and gain insights or peer validation than true education.

A teacher using charts for training under an oath of confidentiality is entirely different. It is a responsible practice, not a justification for public analysis driven by ego and the need for validation.

So the next time an astrologer publicly “interprets” someone’s chart, ask: Who benefits? Is it the person whose fate is being discussed? Or is it the one speaking, feeding their need to be relevant?

Dr. Sowmya, a physician, yogic practitioner, and astrologer, expressed her perspective in her writings.
